Artist Statement:

I did my animation on a short story from H.P. Lovecraft, which was one of the ideas I had. I Twisted the ending a bit since I didn't exactly like how it ends in the original story. The house was supposedly struck by lightning which still leaves the ending ambiguous on whether the man was eaten. I thought about adding in a waking up sequence but that I felt that would've left the ending on a strange note. Overall I’d say I conveyed the main gist of the story well enough to be understood. The process was rather difficult for me. I cut out a lot of scenes and dialogue to make the flow a little better. The original story is around 3000 words with the old man's monologue making up a good amount. I think the voice over I had in the animation was cut rather short, some more context would’ve made it a lot better. Animation-wise, I was just looking for ways to fill empty time during the monologue which resulted in lots of repeated scenes. I probably edited each scene about 3 times after I thought they were done to keep things relatively consistent in between scenes. Adjusting each drawing into layers after I finished was pretty tedious and in hindsight a big blunder with how much time it took. In the end I settled for what I felt was decent work that cut a lot of corners. For my first time with animation I’d say I did pretty well. It certainly isn’t my finest handiwork but I am glad I got it to a decent place. Learning the different processes was pretty fun.
